Director's Statement

I wanted to always make a movie, that showed the troubles that women in our Indian culture go through, and the amount of abuse that they undergo.

I remember as a child growing up, I would see a lot of verbal abuse being carried out on women that were in our community, and what used to shock me the most, was that it was accepted by everyone that witnessed it, and even more shocking no one would step forward to offer any support to these women. Probably the most shocking factor in all of this, is that the community talk, would be directed against these women, saying things like: ‘Well it is her fault, she must have done something wrong’ and that too being said by other women.

In my time in London, I knew of a very wealthy family that abused their daughter in laws on a regular basis, be it verbal, emotional and also physical. This family has so much power and control over everyone, that I could never understand why they had the upper hand.

KHAZANA was put together from what I saw in that family and with what I saw their daughter in laws go through, and the second half of the movie is based on the answer to a question that one of the daughter in laws asked me ‘What would you do if you were in my position Rahul?’
